I'm going to kind of switch gears for a little while. I want to discuss something I've come across recently and that is starting to get on my nerves and has become a problem to both my husband and I.
My husband and I have been trying to move to one particular city now for some time. We are having a horrible time trying to find a place that meets our needs in this particular city for more reasons then one. One of our biggest problems is that the city we want to move in sprays pesticides all the time for no reason and it gets sprayed everywhere. I would go as far to say this city is totally obsessed and crazy with pesticides. They spray it out in the air, they spray it monthly or bimonthly in all condos, apartments, and townhouses. Some places even have it to where it sprays out in the walls of the home, they even spray your lawn and surrounding area. Basically if it's there, its got pesticide on it, in it, or around it.
Where the problem comes in at for us is that we live an organic lifestyle as much as possible. We try not to get too crazy with it, but we make healthier choices where possible. I've completely ditched makeup, we have switched form using Lysol and Clorox wipes to using organic types of cleaners, and everything I now use on my body be it soap, shampoo, toothpaste and so on are all organic. I try to live as healthy as possible, I know there are some things I can not control, because really when you get down to it, is ANYTHING truly healthy? However if it's in my power I will try to choose the healthier option every time.
This spraying pesticides thing just don't sit well with me or my husband, especially when to me there is no issue. Where I live no one just goes and sprays for the heck of it, just because we are scared and want to prevent something. I've lived in the same place for 3 years now and have not had one single bug problem and I don't spray nothing, nor does anyone force me too, and it certainly is not sprayed out into the air. In this place we are wanting to move you are forced to. The HOA makes them spray (which HOA is another rant for me, you don't even want to get me started on that one) basically from what I've seen they force the issue of spraying in the dwellings. I've heard different spins from you can sign a piece of paper to opt out but we have so many contracts you'd have to call so many numbers to opt out that we can't guarantee your home wont be sprayed. I've heard you can opt out but you have to pay the HOA a fee to opt out(money hungry much?). I've also heard that you can not opt out that HOA makes them do it.
Now my take with this whole pesticide thing is that it's just beyond crazy. Why spray unless you have a problem? I personally could careless about a few mosquitoes in my yard, and if I have a problem in my home i'd rather try to take care of it organically first and if that does not work i'd have to spray as a last resort. However spray once and let it go, don't spray monthly or bimonthly. However in this state pesticides are life apparently. They take airplanes and spray it out in the air as I've said, which seems a bit excessive to me. When I think about it, you know breathing that in all of the time simply just can not be healthy. Especially when spraying it inside the home, I just can't imagine how that can be healthy as often as they spray this stuff. It's a known fact pesticides are not healthy and are toxic, just saw something about it the other day on TV about how unhealthy it is.
Now i'm not sure how they do single family dwellings, if they force this issue in those as well. However I'll know soon enough because i'm going to be getting into contact with some rental agencies soon and see how that goes. So far I have only found only one place that is a town home that don't spray but it's so far away from the place we really want to be, we are not sure if it's even a option. To get anything or do anything we have to drive a long way into the place we originally wanted to be any ways.
Being that they spray pesticides as much as they do you'd think one just wouldn't move there if they didn't like it. However my husband and I are in love with this place, we belong there and every waking moment during the day we spend wanting to be there. To me this city we are wanting to move to feel more like home to me, then my actual hometown does. It's where we want to be more then anywhere else in the world. So not going simply just isn't a option for us. I just wish it didn't have to be such a unhealthy place to live, ashame they have to spray like they do. We are currently trying to find all the places we can that don't spray inside the home and then pick our best option from that, however it's like a needle in a haystack. I keep hoping that if I dig hard enough, I will come up with the perfect place for us to live there, that does not spray pesticides inside the home. I know I can't do much about the outside of the home, but I can try to control what does go on inside my home.
Now i'm curious to see how others feel on this topic. What do you do if you live an organic lifestyle and live in a area where things like this go on? If you don't live a organic lifestyle do you take any precautions when pesticides are sprayed? Do you get annoyed by the abundance of pesticides sprayed in the area that you live in?How do you cope if you have allergies or asthma? I'd love to hear from you on this topic, so chime in with a comment and let's discuss!
